The War at the Shore: Donald Trump, Steve Wynn,...

The high-stakes battle between two casino titans over the Las Vegas of the East Coast. It's all quiet now on the eastern front of the American gaming industry - Atlantic City, New Jersey - but for five chaotic years, real estate developer Richard "Skip" Bronson was at the white-hot center of a titanic clash of money and power that transformed Atlantic City from a struggling day-tripper place with buses in and out to a born again destination drawing tourists from New York, Philadelphia, and other major cities along the eastern seaboard. From 1995 to 2000, two of the world's best-known companies - Mirage Resorts and Trump Resorts - run by two of the most flamboyant businessmen of our time, fought a bare-knuckled, high-stakes battle over a prime piece of real estate in one of America's most famous resort towns. No money was spared, no punch was pulled, no invective went unhurled in The War at the Shore. Now Bronson, who was a member of the board of directors of Mirage and president of New City Development Company, the Mirage subsidiary whose primary purpose was to build a top-level new casino and hotel complex in Atlantic City, tells the inside story of this epic struggle. Along the way, Bronson weaves in fascinating and inspiring anecdotes from his complicated past: A product of a fractured family and city-owned housing project in Hartford, Connecticut; former paperboy, spelling bee champion yet college dropout; and prolific developer of shopping centers and office buildings-including CityPlace, Connecticut's tallest skyscraper-Bronson embodies the self-made business success story. Gripping from beginning to end, The War at the Shore is a rare up-close look at the world of casino development and the essential modern chapter in the history of America's "Boardwalk Empire". 1. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The hotel is one of a pair of twin buildings designed by architect Alejandro Bustillo in 1946. Inspired by seafront Hotel du Palais in Biarritz, France, the hotel and neighboring Central Casino remain architectural landmarks of the city of Mar del Plata as well as of Argentina. Surrounded by an esplanade built by the provincial government with the future hotal in mind in 1938 and facing Bristol Beach, the lobby featured murals painted by César Bustillo (the architect's son) and its decoration was planned by famed French designer Jean-Michel Frank (who was in Argentina at work on the Llao Llao Hotel) together with Casa Comte. The 500-room establishment opened in 1948 and was long the largest in Argentina, the neighboring Central Casino was the largest in the world by floor space until the 1990 opening of Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort, in Atlantic City.

From reviews of the first edition: 'A succinct and informed account of [Flagler's] leadership in transforming Florida's economy.'--'American Historical Review''An important contribution to the understanding of Standard Oil's extended partnership and how the personal desire of Flagler led to the early development of Florida's Atlantic Coast.'--'The Historian'Henry M. Flagler (1830-1913), the ambitious Gilded Age tycoon who designed and built much of Florida's fashionable east coast, rode to success on the rails. As John D. Rockefeller's closest adviser in the 1870s, Flagler helped assemble the Standard Oil empire. In this thoroughly researched biography, Akin shows that Flagler understood early in his career that cheap freight rates determined industrial profits. Portraying Flagler as an aggressive entrepreneur, Akin documents his shrewd negotiations to obtain reduced rates, rebates, and drawbacks from the railroads, thus assuring Standard Oil's national domination over oil transportation costs. Flagler drove himself as hard as he drove a bargain, obsessed with the desire to create a monument to himself that he called 'my domain.' His legacy was no less than modern Florida. In 1885, at the age of fifty-five, he turned his attention away from Standard Oil and began construction of the Ponce de Leon luxury hotel in St. Augustine, the city where he had honeymooned with his second wife. Realizing he could never fill its rooms unless better transportation with the North was available, he embarked on the second railroad venture of his lifetime, creation of the Florida East Coast Railway. Flagler's resort empire eventually included The Breakers in Palm Beach and the Royal Palm in Miami; his Atlantic coast railroad extended all the way to Key West, an engineering achievement that was called the 'eighth wonder of the world.' By the beginning of the twentieth century, Flagler dominated not just the resort and railroad industries in Florida but steamship and agricultural operations, too. Florida politicians gave his projects preferential treatment, even changing the state's divorce law so he could marry for a third time. Woven into this biography are details about Flagler's family, personality, three marriages, alienation from his only son, and devotion to the Presbyterian church--copy that fueled society gossip columns from New York to Palm Beach for decades. Edward N. Akin, author of Mississippi: An Illustrated History and other works on southern history, taught at Mississippi College in Clinton. His biography of Henry Flagler won the 1985 Phi Alpha Theta manuscript prize.

What else would you call twelve men that spent nearly nine months doing God's own work searching for bodies at Ground Zero, after the 9-11 attack on New York City and refusing to be paid for it? They're a Police Department legend. They all worked together before they retired, then after the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center Complex, they came out of retirement and worked as an independent Recovery Team. They do everything and go everywhere together. After their incredible story eventually became public, they've been continually sought after by numerous officials from both the public and private sectors to continue their incredible legacy. Offered various assignments ranging from emergency rescue and recovery operations, to being used for covert operations in our nations continuous quest of thwarting terrorism at both home and abroad, the members of The Twelve Disciples have always declined these offers. Until now. Fiction After one of their team members is gunned down just a few short blocks from his home, while helping to free a young woman that had just been kidnapped and was about to be brutally raped, the remaining members of this unique team have decided to use their partners death to officially reunite them. In honor of their fallen brother, The Twelve Disciples have decided to continue their amazing legacy under the direct authority of the Secretary of Homeland Security. The Twelve Disciples have now become an independent covert investigatory team, charged with the responsibility of investigating some of the most horrendous criminal cases that the government has been unable to solve, or bring to trial for various reasons; including the lack of legally obtained evidence. Since The Twelve Disciples are no longer sworn Police Officers and acting in a civilian capacity, yet still legally permitted to carry their firearms, they are no longer bound by any Police Department policies, or court ordered procedures. Thus, any evidence seized by them can be used in court, regardless of how it was obtained. Finally, the good guys can do their job without worrying about the rule book. Of course obtaining such evidence can result in members of The Twelve Disciples actually having to break many laws themselves and can even cause them to be arrested by local authorities. But once the Secretary of Homeland Security applies the power of his office, the charges against them must be dropped in the best interest of national security. So once again when our nation needs their help, just like after the terrorist attack on 9/11/2001, The Twelve Disciples have put their lives on hold to answer the call. Their first assignment deals with domestic terrorism. An entire city is brought to its knees by a sadistic madman who appears to be a definite protégé of Norman Bates. He's already killed five women, with each victim dressed-up to look exactly like sexy clones from Robert Palmer music videos and there's no end in sight. With the summer tourist season about to begin, the economic survival of Atlantic City, New Jersey is completely threatened by this lunatic. He's already caused serious financial chaos to this seaside gambling city, whose sole economic survival depends on tourism. Because of his presence, hundreds of hotel rooms and many conventions have already been cancelled and business in the local restaurants and shops have also suffered. If the killings aren't stopped and a suspect arrested soon, the entire summer season will be in jeopardy. A human version of a Great White Shark is terrorizing another summer resort town. Due to heavy political pressure, the newly appointed Police Chief of Atlantic City cannot reach outside his department to the State Police or to the FBI for help, even though the Atlantic City Police Department is completely overwhelmed by these killings and cannot solve them on their own. But the Chief does reach out surreptitiously to an old friend at the Department of Homeland Security. Although the DHS cannot officially get involved, because they're too busy chasing down radical Islamic fundamentalists, they ultimately send The Twelve Disciples to help with the case. It's like having the Dirty Dozen on speed dial.
