The Hayes Mansion is a hotel resort in San Jose, California, United States. It was originally constructed as a mansion and has been referred to as one of the finest examples of late 19th-century architecture in the Santa Clara Valley. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally the sprawling estate of the Hayes family, it replaced the family s wooden Queen Anne style house that burned to the ground in 1899. The matriarch of the family, Mary Hayes Chynoweth, commissioned her architect in 1903, George Page, to build, if not a fireproof structure, one featuring the latest fire safety features of the day. This mansion was intended to provide a triple residence for Mrs. Chynoweth and the growing families of her two sons (Everis A. Hayes and Jay Orly Hayes) although Mary died in July before the house was completed in November.
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The MGM Grand fire occurred on November 21, 1980 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino (now Bally's Las Vegas) in Paradise, Nevada, USA. The fire killed 84 people, most through smoke inhalation. The tragedy remains the worst disaster in Nevada history, and the second-worst hotel fire in modern U.S. history, after the 1946 Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta that killed 119 people. At the time of the fire, approximately 5,000 people were in the hotel and casino, a 26-story luxury resort with more than 2,000 hotel rooms. Just after 7:00 on the morning of November 21, 1980, a fire broke out in a restaurant known as The Deli. The Clark County Fire Department was the first agency that responded. Other agencies responding included Las Vegas Fire & Rescue and the Henderson Fire Department.
Walking the Perfect Square introduced Moe Prager - retired New York City cop-turned-wine shop owner - to much acclaim and an enthusiastic readership. Still possessed of his vintage police savvy, and perhaps the only Jewish licensed PI in the five boroughs, Moe wonders if he's really meant to be a merchant and not a cop. Redemption Street finds him in 1981, lured into the mystery of a 1966 hotel fire - one that killed seventeen people, including his first love - by a long-grieving brother and Moe's own restless determination to set things right. Reed Farrel Coleman's crisp, page-turning narrative has Moe trudging through his childhood summer vacation stomping grounds, the now-decaying Catskill resort scene. The borscht belt's near-forgotten landscape of scarred lives, ambitious politicians, and corrupt cops is the minefield Moe must brave to find the truth. Was the fire really sparked by a negligent smoker or was it murder? Will the long dead keep their secrets or divulge their stories? And will what Moe uncovers lead him down another blind alley or into the bright light of Redemption Street?
When the twentieth century was young, visitors to Cape May knew exactly how to show the folks back home the attractions, accommodations, and ambiance of 'the Nation's Oldest Seaside Resort': they sent a penny postcard. Publishers such as local entrepreneur Joseph K. Hand provided a vast choice of views, capturing white sands crowded with colorful tents and wool-suited bathers or beachfront hotels such as the Stockton, Lafayette, and Congress Hall. Popular postcards depicted amusement centers and nearby diversions: the Casino, Red Mill, Corinthian Yacht Club, Fun Factory, Convention Hall, and Cape May Point Lighthouse. Reprinted Victorian views of hotels destroyed by fire served as reminders of the resort's glory days. Real-photo cards chronicled newsworthy events including the creation of the harbor, construction of the huge Hotel Cape May, and the 1907 fire at the Iron Pier.
¿On the night of the 11th to 12th September, I was made to understand that the allies would not keep me alive in their hands... It was 14:00 hours when I saw the first glider land, followed by others and then groups of men approached the refuge, prepared to eliminate any resistance. The guards watching over me couldn¿t understand what was happening and didn¿t fire. The whole thing lasted five minutes. The enterprise, example of the Germans¿ organisation, decision and sense of initiative would be remembered in the history of the war. In time it will become legendary.¿With these prophetic words, Mussolini himself described the audacious operation that freed him from his captors in the Hotel Campo Imperatore. On 12 September 1943, two months after he had been stripped of power by King Victor Emmanuel III, and sent to Gran Sasso, a mountain resort in central Italy where he was kept in complete isolation. Mussolini was rescued by the Germans in Operation Oak (Unternehmen Eiche). This was a raid planned by General Kurt Student and carried out by the infamous SS Lieutenant Colonel (Obersturmbannf¿hrer) Otto Skorzeny. This book provides a complete, illustrated account of the controversial and dangerous liberation of one of history¿s most infamous leaders, Mussolini.
